Embarking on a journey through the American West, Fern stores all her worldly possessions and begins a simpler existence in her kitted-out van on the road. Recently widowed, and having lost everything during the recession, her rugged, un-rooted lifestyle baffles her friends and family as she drives from place to place on the look-out for seasonal work. Though Fern must adapt to the trials and pains of nomad-life, she also finds a sense of community in the open road, the wisened, expansive landscapes and her dedicated compatriots.
Built on the shoulders of modern-day nomads, Nomadland is based on Jessica Bruder’s eponymous book, with a cast populated by real-life nomads playing fictional versions of themselves - including Linda, Swankie and Bob. From Oscar® and BAFTA®-winning director Chloe Zhao, this intimate drama is a gentle and all-encompassing look at a rare way of life, full of quiet joy, generosity and humility, with a breathtaking leading performance from the Oscar®-winning Frances McDormand as Fern.
