Vinz (Vincent Cassel), who is Jewish, Hubert (Hubert Kounde), who is black, and Said (Saïd Taghmaoui), who is Arabic, are young men from the lower rungs of the French economic ladder; they have no jobs, few prospects, and no productive way to spend their time. They wander the streets to fill their days, sometimes caught up in skirmishes between the police and other disaffected youth.

Taking place over the 24 hours following the police shooting of a young Arab man, resentment against police brutality and the current political landscape simmers in the three friends. With Vinz in possession of a police-owned gun lost in the chaos, circumstances seem poised for tragedy. Mathieu Kassovitz’s bold and inventive film, beautifully shot in black and white by Pierre Aïm and showing in a 4K restoration, is essential watching.

"One of the most blisteringly effective pieces of urban cinema ever made." (Wendy Ide, The Times)
