Part of the Nuart Aberdeen 2019 Season
In 1960, architectural journalist and urban activist Jane Jacobs wrote The Death and Life of Great American Cities, a hugely influential work which argued against urban renewal programmes and presented a revolutionary new way of thinking about the construction of a city - one which began with people, not buildings.
Woven from fascinating archival footage, Matt Tyrnauer's timely documentary takes as its central point the David-and-Goliath battle between Jacobs and ruthless city planner Robert Moses as she harnessed the power of the people to save the historic neighbourhoods of Greenwich Village and SoHO from destructive expressways.
