With the re-release of Japanese master Hirokazu Kore-eda’s debut feature Maborosi, it was high time to revisit some of his best early works - particularly in light of his success with the Palme d’Or winning Shoplifters.

Through this mini-retrospective, a few clear themes emerge - memory, family, grief and abandonment in particular - but it’s also clear that Kore-eda’s magic touch lies in his ability to tackle them with levity and a distinctly humanist outlook.
