Journey's End

Arriving at Belmont from Friday is the fresh new adaptation of R.C. Sheriff's 1928 anti-war play, Journey's End, which takes us into the trenches of World War I with a group of British officers - led by the mentally disintegrating young officer Stanhope - who are variously awaiting their fate. Marking the 100th anniversary of the first world war's end, this powerful drama features an all-star British cast including Sam Claflin, Asa Butterfield, Toby Jones, Tom Sturridge, Stephen Graham and Paul Bettany. 

Also gracing our screens is Phantom Thread, the new feature from Paul Thomas Anderson who is collaborating once more with Daniel Day-Lewis in his final film as an actor. Day-Lewis plays Reynolds Woodcock, a obsessive dressmaker who comes across Alma (Vicky Krieps) who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Meanwhile, Glory is an excellent Bulgarian drama in which a unassuming railway employee becomes a PR pawn after he stumbles upon a large amount of money and immediately notifies the authorities. 

Continuing is The Post, Spielberg's latest film which features terrific performances from Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep and is a timely defence of the press. Currently in the running for the Oscar© for Best Picture, it's a must see!

The Neverending Story

This week's Kino Bar is Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Werner Herzog's good-cop-gone-bad action thriller starring Nicolas Cage as the rogue detective. Meanwhile, our Filmhouse Junior screening is The Neverending Story, an enchanting tale in which young Bastian wanders into a shop and encounters a magical story-book that can transport him away to the magical land of Fantasia. We're still waiting for our magical luck dragon to arrive!

Wednesday sees a special screening of Royal Orchestra Live: Tosca, Jonathan Kent’s handsome production of the Puccini classic which captures the dangerous political turbulence of Rome in 1800, whilst we welcome Douglas Dunn to Culture Café, a  Scottish poet and an influential editor, teacher and critic.
